About the Speaker:
Denis Thouard is Research Director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) , and is Alfred-Grosser Professor in Frankfurt am Main (2021-22) . His main fields of interest are Hermeneutics and Philosophy of social sciences. His major publications include Philologie als Wissensmodel (ed. with Friedrich Vollhardt and Fosca Mariani Zini, 2010) , La philologie au présent. Pour Jean Bollack (ed. with Christoph König, 2010) and Herméneutique critique: Bollack, Szondi, Celan (2012).
Lecture Introduction:
The lecture intends to sketch a brief outline of the evolution of classical scholarship in the West, mainly in Germany during the 19th century. We will point out some central features and problems. One of the main characteristic of this kind of philology is the attempt to bring philology to a scientific status.
